Experience the 2024 Solar Eclipse at the Indianapolis Zoo—It’s “Totality” Something to Roar About!
A rare total solar eclipse will be visible right here in Indiana on April 8, 2024!
Did you know that many animals change their behavior during an eclipse, as day turns to “night” and back to day again? Primates such as orangutans and gibbons have been heard sending more calls to each other. Chimpanzees might sit and watch the sky. Giraffes, elephants, and other large mammals might make vocalizations—or head for the barn where they sleep! Many birds change their song. Fireflies may flash, bees slow or stop their flights. Even dung beetles slow and then stop rolling their dung ball along the ground!

Come join in all the fun and learn more about the world around you with eclipse programming at the Zoo!
- Find out all about solar eclipses, safe eclipse viewing—and how YOU can get involved in helping scientists track animal behavior. Zoo educators will be on hand daily during xZOOberance at the Zoo, March 21–April 14 and on eclipse day, April 8.
- Come watch the eclipse with us!
- The Zoo will have extended hours on April 8, 2024 from 9am-6pm. Explore the spring beauty of White River Gardens, visit animal exhibits and enjoy fun for all ages across the Zoo.
- Event parking is $30 and free for members. Traffic in Indianapolis and around the Zoo is expected to be heavy on Monday, April 8th. We strongly recommend visitors to you arrive at the Zoo before 10am for parking.
- Free protective eyewear will be available (while supplies last) for eclipse viewing during the afternoon. Protect your eyes while looking at the sun and then experience rare solar eclipse totality at 3:06pm, when only the sun’s bright corona layer will be visible around the shadow of the moon.
